Tutorial “Users and their influence on design” winter semester 2009/10, Institute of Architecture and Design, University of Technology Vienna.
The theoretical part of the course offered material related to the users’ role in architectural design, especially in housing: Everyday life; Who are users? Research on needs; participation; expert laymen communication; constellations, roles; ideas if users; interpretation examples. In addition, small exercises like role plays and discussions were conducted and inputs related to the research exercise were delivered (research question, interview guide, interviewing, transcription, analysis, etc.). All students did a research exercise: They made an interview with a person about her experience as a user of architecture (of a specific building), analyzed the interview and wrote a research report on the results.
